Programming and Data Management for SPSS 16.0: A Guide for SPSS and SAS® Users documents the wealth of functionality beneath the SPSS user interface. It includes detailed examples of command syntax, the Output Management System (OMS), and extending command syntax with the Python® and R programming languages. The accompanying CD-ROM includes the command files, data files, and Python modules used in the book. The book also contains a chapter for SAS programmers, showing equivalent SPSS code for many common data management tasks. With knowledge gained from this book, you will be able to use the many tools available within SPSS to import data from almost any source, clean it, transform it, merge it with other data, and get it into the condition required to produce reliable models and informative results. You will learn how to utilize the Python programming language to control the SPSS command stream, read from and write to the active dataset, create new datasets, and create custom output. You will also learn how to write custom procedures in R, as well as how to create new SPSS commands-called extension commands-that are implemented in Python or R.
This edition describes the many new features available with SPSS 16.0, most notably the ability to program in R from within SPSS, the ability to concurrently access multiple datasets from within Python, the ability to create new SPSS commands implemented in Python or R, and the ability to operate on output objects such as pivot tables in a platform-independent manner.
This book reflects the work of many members of the SPSS staff, as well as that of SPSS-X list member Raynald Levesque, whose examples formed the backbone of earlier editions and remain important in this edition.
Please note, Programming and Data Management for SPSS 16.0: A Guide for SPSS and SAS® Users is intended for use with SPSS 16.0.1 or later. If you are using SPSS 14.0 or earlier, we encourage you to upgrade to SPSS 16.0 to take full advantage of the SPSS Programmability Extension™. The SPSS Programmability Extension was added in SPSS 14.0 and improved in SPSS 14.0.1, SPSS 15.0, SPSS 15.0.1, and SPSS 16.0.
